The multinational corporation that Michael Moore thinks is destroying America is providing a commendable national service: “every veteran who wants a job” will reportedly have one at Wal-Mart. The NYT reports:
The announcement, to be made in a speech in New York by William S. Simon, the president and chief executive of Wal-Mart U.S., represents among the largest hiring commitments for veterans in history.Company officials said they believe the program, which will officially begin on Memorial Day — May 27 this year — will lead to the hiring of more than 100,000 people in the next five years, the length of the commitment.
Wal-Mart has faced serious criticism in the past over its treatment of workers, but there’s very good reason to think that there’s more to this than just a public display of benevolence. Hiring veterans can be good business, as many skills that come from military service translate well into the workforce: hard work, commitment, loyalty, teamwork, management skills, and decision-making abilities are all qualities employers want. Thanks to the colossal size of Wal-Mart’s supply chain, the company has the means to provide guaranteed employment to veterans, for whom unemployment rates are regrettably high. This is an exemplary business decision, and one we hope more employers consider. We defer to the First Lady for the final word:
“We all believe that no one who serves our country should have to fight for a job once they return home,” Mrs. Obama said in the statement. “Wal-Mart is setting a groundbreaking example for the private sector to follow.”
